Jacob Sheep!

We are very excited about getting our first herd of Jacob Sheep. We did a lot of research regarding the care and upkeep of the sheep before deciding that we wanted to them. Then it came time for us to pick a breed. This was going to be the hard part, so we decided to narrow the breeds down by what we wanted to use them for. Sheep are typically used for wool, meat, breading, and milking. We knew that starting off we did not want to milk them, so “milking sheep” were out of the picture, which removed about 10% of the options, leaving us the majority of breeds remaining. Next we decided to see what was available locally.

We came across a small herd that was available in Bend, Oregon. They had seven Jacob Sheep available. I thought that this could be a great start, but how would I know if they where healthy and worth breading to produce more quality sheep. We found the Jacob Sheep Breeders Association which had a lot of great information on how to look at the breed and to see that we could properly care for them. The information that we saw was very exciting to us and after reviewing their breed standards, we felt ready to visit the heard to decide if we wanted to buy them.

When we arrived, the owner was very open about discussing the sheep, how she came to own them, the history that she had on them, and how she was caring for them at the time. After looking at them and seeing that they were all in good health and fit the breed standards, we decided that we were ready to purchase our first heard of Jacob Sheep.
